Racing Teammates!

Back in January I wrote a short note for this site speculating on the possibility of team orders, and how competing against other teams may well end up as competing with each other in the final stages of a race. Dario Franchitti and Marco Andretti had me on my feet yelling in the last few laps of this weekend’s race, and I was at home in my living room. What I was yelling was “don’t take each other out”! Any race fan that doesn’t get excited watching a finish like that needs to check for a pulse.

Ashley (“My husband!”) Judd was having a barely controlled hissy while Michael Andretti looked as if he was relaxing in a hot tub. How does he do that? It looks like the team orders are “beat the other guys” then “beat each other”.

“All’s well that ends well” is a great old saying, and I surely can’t complain about the level of excitement and entertainment at the end of this race, but…..well, I guess there are no “buts”! This is great stuff, and just part of what makes the sport so great.

What’s going to happen when this wheel to wheel, almost supersonic infighting takes out teammates? You tell me!
