NASCAR Wants Few Changes

Amid the flurry and hype of getting ready for its 60th season, NASCAR hopes to settle down to its core racing program and minimize changes this season. Brian France is quoted as saying “We’re getting back to the basics: we’re going to try to minimize changeâ€. Changing to the “Chase†format and the “COT†has had a significant impact on the Cup series and both teams and drivers, as well as sponsors are ready for stability for awhile.
The 50th running of the Daytona 500 comes in NASCARS 60th anniversary season and there will be few, if any, new policies. For example, in response to a lot of complaints, drivers outside of the top 35 in points will all be grouped together to qualify at the end of the qualification session. This speaks to the differences in the track due to temperature, time of day, etc. and attempts to have these drivers all take their qualifying runs under the same conditions.
Also coming out of NASCAR today, and reported in my local newspaper in a way that I just don’t understand it, is a statement that NASCAR wants to give the drivers more “breathing room†in regard to stating their opinions and criticisms. I guess we will learn exactly what that means in the coming weeks, and I for one, am certainly ready for the 2008 season opener at Daytona.
