Danica’s Anger

In my humble opinion, the IRL made a stupid mistake by having that big security guy and other officials get in Danica’s way when she was on her way to confront Ryan Briscoe. What was she going to do? Do they think she had a shotgun under her drivers suit? The guy made a mistake that took her out of a potentially good finish and anyone else in the world would have been mad a hell, and interested in a face to face discussion.
If she picked up a lug wrench on the way, or did anything else to indicate that something more than a shouting match was in the offing, then they should have stopped her, but absent something like that, they should have let her vent. No driver is gong to throw a punch at another driver wearing a helmet. All that does is hurt and break hands!
The time to break up their conversation would have been just before it turned into a shoving match or something, although it would have been fun to watch them flailing around on the ground. NASCAR steps in when driver conversations get physical and that is a good thing, but I still get a kick out of remembering the time that Jimmie Spencer popped Kurt Busch in the snot locker.
The point is, she had every right to be upset, like any driver in that circumstance would have been and the IRL should not have been so heavy handed. My local newspaper makes the point that they would not have stopped AJ Foyt until he reached inside the other guys’ helmet and began to extract him through the visor. That’s probably correct although it doesn’t mean it is the right thing to do, but come on IRL – lighten up. We fans love a little drama, so let the drivers be drivers!
